Ready for Winter

She fledged in my garden this spring, and her father wore himself out feeding her and her brother. All she has to do is get through winter here in Kansas, and she will be hatching chicks of her own. She's one bold little downy woodpecker, and scolds me when I approach too close to her. "Sorry, Miss," I say, "I leave the garden to you."
