I grew up on the Pacific ocean as a commercial fisherman, and my love for life at sea in a small boat makes me ache with longing when I remember the huge chaos of it. For this self portrait, I held the 50mm in my hand and thought of holding the helm of a small boat in a storm. We are always at heart who we were growing up, and I am lucky to have grown up under the stars.
I am immediately reminded of Ernest Hemingway's, The Old Man & The Sea, probably my all time favourite book. For a self shot, arms length picture you have produced a wonderfully intriguing shot. You possess the wonderful craggy face of a man who has lived his life on the waters, the beautiful grey in your beard pointing towards age and wisdom. The shot, perhaps though, is made by the wonderful capture of that far away look in your eye, the look that tells us, here is a man who has witnessed a multitude, borne pain and happiness as brothers and come out the far side learned and at peace. It is an extremely natural shot, for one that was deliberately posed. It could be a candid shot taken without knowledge. Big congratulations as both model and photographer
This is a wonderful picture of you and the gaze into the distance is so captivating... I can SEE you on the boat lost in thought and finding peace in your beautiful world!
