Sailor Apart from the Sea

Description

I grew up on the Pacific ocean as a commercial fisherman, and my love for life at sea in a small boat makes me ache with longing when I remember the huge chaos of it. For this self portrait, I held the 50mm in my hand and thought of holding the helm of a small boat in a storm. We are always at heart who we were growing up, and I am lucky to have grown up under the stars.

How tedious it is to read ‘critiques’ that are not about the work and ways to improve it but rather about the writer and his likes and dislikes. My favorite book has zero to do with your photograph.
So let’s focus on you and your efforts. I normally do not bother to discuss selfies because they are basically a roll of the dice. You click the shutter not knowing what you will capture. In this case you got a decent ‘portrait’ but with a lot of flaws. Let’s consider what you could accomplish if you were taking a real portrait.
First you would be able to see the subject (obviously we are no longer talking about a selfie) and make sure it is in focus. You have little depth of field, thus you ear is blurry and even your right eye, which is also cut in half. Your subject must be in focus for any serious portrait.
The subject is staring into space; this is good. But since he is looking over my (the photographer’s) left shoulder it would be much better to place the subject on the right side of the frame. It’s OK if he loses body parts like an ear, but do not allow any part of him to be cut in half, like his forehead.
Bottom line, leave the selfies to the kids. Find a decent subject and control your camera to achieve a result that is not simply a product of chance. If you want or need a picture of yourself, get someone else to take it. Sorry, I presume you sent me this picture to help you improve your art. Somethings should never be shown to the world.
