The flicker chick calls for his mother with a piercing, "eeEEEk!" that wakes the dawn, and she, in a neighboring tree responds with reassuring high-pitched coos. These woodpeckers care for their chicks long after they have left the nest, and for this investment provide us with such beauty as you see, here in my garden in Kansas.
In addition to the excellent color and detail, I appreciate your descriptions here as well. You might as well have this photo and description in a guide to birdwatching.
